Sharing the Bounty

One-half of Sunday offerings are donated to a worthy cause selected by our Congregation.  Each month is dedicated to one recipient who is announced on Sundays before the offering. Over the last few years, the following agencies have received Eastrose shared offerings:

  • Autistic Children’s Activities Program, Inc
  • Canine Companions for Independence
  • Community of Welcoming Congregations
  • Community Transition School
  • Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon
  • Friends of Peace Pilgrim
  • Good News Community Health Center
  • Gresham-Barlow School District Foundation
  • Human Solutions, Inc.
  • Oregon Council for Hispanic Advancement
  • Oregon Interfaith Power & Light
  • Parkrose Schools
  • Planned Parenthood of the Col./Willamette
  • Sisters of The Road
  • Snow-CAP Community Charities
  • Wallace Medical Concern
  • Western Prison Project

Eastrose friends and members also give time, money and supplies to support Snow-CAP and Daybreak Shelter of Human Solutions, as well as other service and social justice projects.  Special collections are taken over the holidays.

The Eastrose Snowcap collection barrel is located in the Narthex. Each year our congregation donates approximately 39 barrels of clothing, food and supplies to help support our neighbors through tough times.  Hats off to all of you!  Keep up the good work!

Over the holidays we participate in the Guest At Your Table and Mitten Tree programs for the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee.

Our Pacific Northwest District supports its congregations with the Chalice Lighter Program. Each participant agrees to send $15 up to three times per year to pay for special projects. Each congregation that receives the $20,000 to $30,000 donations agrees to keep 30% or more of it’s membership enrolled in the Chalice Lighter Program.   Eastrose has an application pending to help us upgrade our internet presence, to reach out to young adults more effectively, and to do improvements to the 179th Avenue house to make it more usable. We need YOU to sign up to be a Chalice Lighter! It takes less than two minutes to do at the website (under “Connections”). We also have mail-in forms in the lobby. Ask our ambassador Sue Steward for more information.

Eastrose also collects substantial funds for selected organizations at its annual Service Auction.  These are special live auctions, called Lightning Rounds, that provide generous donors to provide tax-deductible gifts from hundreds to tens of dollars, as donors are able and motivated.

Community of Welcoming Congregations

Eastrose is a member of the Community of Welcoming Congregations, an association of religious congregations begun in the Portland metropolitan area that welcomes and affirms people of all sexual orientations.  The Unitarian Universalist Association provides an extensive process for a congregation to become an official Welcoming Congregation.  Eastrose received formal UUA certification as a Welcoming Congregation in 1998.  Eastrose’s membership includes gays and lesbians, both couples and singles.

Eastrose has hosted the East County chapter of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG).  NOTE – new coordinators needed. Our chapter is inactive right now until a new coordinator(s) steps forward. Contact the office if you can help.
